“Its not like I’m burning the flag. Its just that I don’t want to stand.”
Constitution high. A new school that is all about the government. A school about the LAW. When you think LAW you think liberty, and justice, “equality”. Is this sounding a little familiar to you? Sounds like quotes from the flag salute. I interviewed 10 students to see if they say the words and stand. You wouldn’t believe the results I got from a school that is all about “law“ and government.”
We are united and proud of our country! Are we really? When morning announcements come on, conversations are still being carried between students, teachers checking over students work from yesterday, possibly last week. Students eating breakfast. I never see students stand. Maybe in the beginning of the school year. When the teacher actually made the students stand up. And say, “even if you don’t ant to say the words you still have to stand to show respect.” Now and days I don’t even hear that no more. When I asked 10 students do they stand when its time to pledge 8 said no because their too tired, lazy, its to early to stand, “I just don’t do it because I don’t think we need to stand to show that we respect the flag.” “No sometimes I can’t even hear the morning announcements because the class room be too loud and noisy.” This is a classic because I heard it so many times during interviews.“ No because class is too loud, and the teacher's don’t even stand and the Principal says it too slow." "It’s already to early in the morning to stand and he says it too slow.” One person said yes he do stand and say the Words. “Its only 30 seconds long.” Another person surprised me when he said he as Muslim and doesn’t stand. All though thats not what surprised me. What surprised me was when, I asked him if he wasn't Muslim would he stand? He said "Yes". He’ll stand and say the words. He also said stated that “teachers have the flag tied up like a bandana…” and we don’t even have flagpole!"
As you read this article do this compare to you? Not just to students but teachers and parents when they was in high school? Or maybe when ever you do hear the flag salute do you stand? Do you relate to their comments? That When you don’t stand its because your tired, or feel as though you shouldn’t have to stand to show respect? That you have your on Ways of showing? The flag salute does say… one nation under god, individual for liberty and justice for all. Does it not ? Individual meaning that we are entitled to show respect for the flag in our own way. Thats what these people are doing. Do you think its okay or not?
